What is equity? What does equity mean to you? Where are you at in your equity journey? In the US and more locally, in MN/Steele County, most organizations have systems of power that grant privilege and access unequally such that inequity and injustice result. This is seen whether you are in the public sector or private sector. To pursue needed systemic change related to equity, we need to explore our biases.

Implicit biases are different from explicit biases in that with explicit bias, one may or may not choose to reveal the bias. However, implicit biases are deeply rooted in our subconscious and are hence difficult to access. This is what makes these biases mroe difficult to address with awareness alone. Thus, when thinking about implicit biases, the question we need to ask ourselves is, "What are my biases?" in order to start taking steps to mitigate them.

Dr. Martina Wagner, Equity and Integration Coordinator for Owatonna Public Schools will lead us in a discussion on implicit bias and how it relates to everyday impact and the workplace. HR and business leaders will learn how to address their own work processes to address bias and its impact on your organiztion and culture.

Dr. Martina Wagner has a background in serving English Language learners that has spanned over twenty years in early childhood through adult education. Dr. Wagner has worked extensively both nationally and internationally to increase awareness of educational equity and educational system restructure. Her focus of systems best practice includes establishing systems of success for cultural and linguistic learners, families, as well as successful work with affinity staff of color and intercultural liaison collaboratives.
