Looking to start a mentoring program? That’s great. Mentoring is a proven approach to drive rich learning and development for both mentees and mentors. Mentoring also benefits the organization. Jane Sorensen is the coordinator for the Owatonna Public Schools Teacher mentoring program and has held that position for 9 years.  The teacher mentorship program is designed to reach all teachers who are new to Owatonna Public Schools.  By uniting experienced teacher with probationary teachers, the purpose of the program is to provide support, encourage professional development and enhance teaching performance to impact student academic and behavior achievement.  The learning objectives of the mentoring program are to promote personal and professional growth through dialogue and reflection; to increase student achievement through the improvement of quality teaching; to eliminate isolation of beginning teachers and those new to the organization; and to develop leadership capabilities in experienced teachers.  Jane has experience as a classroom teacher, an instructional coach and a university facilitator and supervisor.  Jane uses her skills and experiences she acquired in Cognitive Coaching and the New Teacher Center to lead and support mentors, mentees and teacher candidates within the public school setting.
